Day 4 - Nelson
Overnight: Bronte Lodge
A full day for sightseeing. Take private winery/apple tour with Daniel Fraser.
Nelson Guide- Daniel
Daniel’s family has been commercially growing fruit for five generations.
Fifteen years ago they opened their home, Bronte Lodge, to guests. The lodge
is nestled on the end of Bronte Peninsular in the family’s coastal orchard
and vineyard. Living and working on an apple orchard all his life, has given
Daniel a unique insight into the New Zealand apple industry and how it
operates across the world.
You will visit Daniel and his family at Bronte
Lodge, for a personal tour of the the apple and pear orchards, including a
tour of one of the world’s most advanced apple and pear processing plants,
where you will see for yourself the process of harvesting apples from start
to finish. Daniel will also conduct a tour of the family vineyards and give
you a bottle of their wine to enjoy.
Day 5 - Nelson to Westport
Overnight: Wave Watchers Retreat
Drive to Westport -(suggest picking up groceries & NZ wine for BBQ). After leaving Westport suggest taking the short Cape Foulwind walk to view the seals at Tauranga Bay and having lunch on the patio of The Bay House. Continue along the beautifully scenic rugged coast to Punakaiki, (Pancake Rocks) to: Wave Watchers Cottage. Be sure to take the 30 min. walk to see the blow holes and rugged pancake rock formations. Walk on the beach and be sure to take the short Truman Track - through rainforest to the beach.
The blowholes are active at high tide - check in at the Department of Conservation Visitors Centre for times. When a heavy sea swell is running, saltwater is pushed at great force through holes in the limestone rock, exiting as a fine spray mist many meters above sealevel. The blowholes at full blast are an amazing sight.
Truman Track is another very popular short walk in Punakaiki. Car parking is available opposite the track starting point, a few minutes drive north from Punakaiki, at Te Miko.
A five minute walk north from the Pancake Rocks walkway is the Punakaiki Cavern, hidden away on the eastern side of the main road. Car parking is available on the sea-side of the road, slightly north of the cavern
